Lockdown days
Too soon? The Melbourne Lockdown was the longest in the world and we are still coming to terms with its effects.
A dystopian, science-fiction time of mandates, masks, suspicious glances,
lines on the ground, the ring of steel, empty shelves, curfews and the army in the streets.
It was a traumatic and difficult time being cut off from loved ones, getting sick ,
being forced into isolation and introspection, and watching the ugly squabbling in the news each day.
There was also beauty and joy; clear skies above Delhi and Beijing, a seal in the Yarra, a deer in Fitzroy.
People threw balcony parties, made sourdough, clapped for paramedics and put teddy bears out for the kids.
For many artists it was a fruitful period. Many people learnt new skills or re-engaged with old ones,
picking up the brush or the camera again, creating things they otherwise wouldn't have time for or just wasting time doodling.
"Lockdown Days" is a way to explore and express all that the Covid 19 pandemic meant to artists and Melbournians
- the sadness, the strangeness, the comedy and the tragedy.
